For Students

LANGUAGES ONLINE MEMORY GAME MAKER

Languages Online from Victoria sets out to provide resources to languages students and teachers. One nifty resource is the Memory Game Maker.

How the game works:

The aim of the interactive memory game is to find all the matching pairs of cards. To do this click on a card in the top row and then click on a card in the bottom row. If the cards match then you have found a pair and the cards remain face up. If not, the cards will turn back over and you can try again until all pairs have been found.

Using the Memory Game Maker, you can build your own interactive memory game. The Game Maker allows you to customise the look of your game and the sound effects used. It also allows you to create your own matching cards. You can specify if you want text, pictures or sounds on each row of cards.

When complete, the game is saved on your computer in the location you specify. From here you can copy the game to a disc, memory stick or onto another computer or network to share with others.

This is actually a very clever concept. Once created, the games themselves are pretty good, with sound effects and flash graphics that don't seem as stilted as some of this stuff can be. The best thing, though, is creating the games in the first place. There's plenty of room for some wicked humour.

It's easy to download and install on a home computer, but you'll probably need to get a teacher or school IT administrator to download it onto a school network. It's worth doing, as Memory Game Maker is clever, effective and quite addictive.

Take a look at Memory Game Maker, and check out some of the other Languages Online stuff while you're there.

What You Can Do

This section of the Languages Education in Australia website focuses on students who want to learn one or more languages other than English.

Every month, we'll post a new resource that makes languages learning easier to tackle in some way.

"Students" can mean anyone from kindergarten kids to tertiary students, of course, but we're confident that over time we'll cover all the age groups we possibly can.

In the meantime, tell us what you think of what you find here: in the blog, on the forum or by email to this address.

You can also use that email address to send us any suggestions for what you think we should let other people know about.
